THE oldest acknowledged the youngest when Meon Valley Bowling Club held the official opening of their new pavilion.

Southampton Old Green, who are celebrating their 700th anniversary this year and who are the sport's original club, presented a plaque to Meon Valley president Jean Huish as a gift from "the oldest to the newest" in Hampshire.

The new building has been called the Arthur Howard Pavilion as despite grant aid and money from the National Lottery, the project was only made possible because of a generous bequest from Mr Howard - a local resident and uncle to the late Frankie Howerd.

The difference in the surname is explained by the fact that comedian Frankie changed his as a stage name.

The long-term planning work was carried out by the Project Group consisting of immediate past president Frank Harrison, club treasurer David Fisher, secretary George Tuffs and senior vice-president John May as well as president Miss Huish and others.
