SOUTHAMPTON Running Club's Adam Bridge lived up to his surname as he came across a barrier in the Totton & Eling Carnival 5k road race.

Instead of hitting the pain barrier, the Southampton Running Club athlete came face-to-face with Totton's notorious train gates and was forced to divert up and over the footbridge - followed by the chasing pack.

But Bridge still managed to clock an impressive 16 minutes and 8 seconds to cover the course from Calmore Industrial Estate to Eling Recreation Ground to signal the start of the town's annual carnival.

Totton Running Club's Jessica Stanfield led the women home in less than 21 minutes and more than 100 runners made the finish line to raise more than £200 for local charities.

"The event is becoming well known and is, as well as raising money for charity, a great way to start the carnival," said organiser Brian Harvey.
