THE transformation of a semi-derelict mansion into a venue for high-class opera was taking place near Winchester.

Grange Park Opera is set to launch its second season at Northington Grange which it hopes will develop into an annual rival to the Glyndebourne festival.

Workmen are preparing the usually empty building into a venue for 300 people with restaurant and changing rooms for the performers.

The opera company has overcome the opposition of some local people who complained of noise pollution and traffic disruption. Last year's event passed off with minimal disruption and was acclaimed an artistic success.

Winchester City Council has given seven-year permission for GPO to run the event, which this year will be held from July 3-18.
