Totton residents had stars in their eyes as they saluted some of the best films and musicals ever made.

The town's annual carnival gave groups from Totton and Eling an opportunity to pay tribute to the world of show business.

The theme of this year's event was music and film. Householders could sample scenes from a variety of top-rated shows - just by standing outside their homes and watching the floats trundle past.

Cats, Grease and Dr Dolittle were just some of the productions featured in the procession, which went from the Calmore industrial estate to Eling.

Testwood Brownies staged Mary Poppins and the Sandy Beck School of Dancing depicted scenes from the popular Cliff Richard film Summer Holiday.

Abba performed some of their greatest hits - and characters from Star Wars and The Flintstones also put in an appearance.

Non-showbiz entries included a float designed by members of Totton and Eling Historical Society, dressed in the fashion of the 19th century.

The commercial class was won by Asda, which entered a float called Batman's Millennium.

The Buckland Boys, who were dressed as male and female police officers, were judged the best in carnival.

And the award for the best group of walkers went to children depicting characters from the Walt Disney cartoon film It's a Bug's Life.

Eling Infants School came first in the children and youth section.
