AN EVEREST climber has handed back the Save Haslar Hospital banner he took up with him to the top of the world's highest mountain.

Mike Trueman, a former Gurkha officer, was born and brought up in Gosport and decided to hold his own protest on top of the world against the proposed closure of the tri-service hospital in the town.

He has now officially handed back the Gosport 2000 banner he took with him on his expedition to the borough council, and it will be displayed at Gosport Town Hall.

His protest came about following a chance meeting in a pub with the Haslar taskforce leader councillor Peter Edgar, who, as last year's council leader, asked him to make the protest on top of Mount Everest. Mr Edgar said: "It was wonderful for Mike to support the biggest campaign the town has ever seens."
