A HAMPSHIRE schoolboy aged just ten died after being found hanging from his bunk bed by his mum.

Ambulance crews were called on Saturday night and immediately called for a police escort to take the boy to hospital.

But, despite efforts to save Aaron Coverdale, he died yesterday at Southampton General Hospital.

Police said the tragedy happened after he had been sent to his room following a telling off at his home in Andover.

Spokesman Pc Ted Reynolds said Aaron had been throwing a ball at a window and was sent to his room.

When his mother Sarah, 31, called him down about 20 minutes later he didn't respond.

Pc Reynolds added: "She thought he had gone out but she then found him hanging from his bunk bed by a power lead from an electrical appliance.

"He was rushed to hospital in Winchester and then transferred to Southampton at 10pm.

"When all the family had gathered the life machine was turned off at around 2am. They are obviously very distraught."

The alarm was raised just after 8pm on Saturday. It is understood a neighbour made desperate efforts to resuscitate the boy and gave him first aid before paramedics arrived on the scene.

Inspector Martin Barlow, of Hampshire police, said it was an "horrific tragedy" but added there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the child's death.

"This will now revert to a coroner's inquiry, and the police involvement will be to help them.

"We are unlikely to be releasing many more details because we obviously have to treat the situation very sensitively," he added.
