IT'S a case of double celebration for Hightown Primary School in Southampton.

The 225-pupil school, in Tunstall Road, has been awarded healthy schools status for its work in promoting emotional literacy among pupils and a Basic Skills Mark for its English and maths teaching.

Pupils spent a fun-filled afternoon playing on a bouncy castle, watching side shows and playing games to mark the occasion.

Parents also prepared plenty of treats for youngsters to tuck into during a school picnic.

Head teacher Sue Bailey, who successfully turned the school around when she took over in September 2001 after Ofsted inspectors placed it in special measures, is delighted.

"We had a very good Ofsted in 2002 and these two awards are excellent news. In the past the school was in a bit of trouble but we have moved forward a huge amount.

"The two awards are the icing on the cake."
