THE creator of Southampton's world-famous Spitfire, RJ Mitchell, pictured, will be commemorated with the unveiling of an English Heritage blue plaque at his former city home.
The ceremony was due to be performed today by the aircraft designer's son, Dr Gordon Mitchell, at 2, Russell Place, Portswood, a week ahead of the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, in which the Spitfire played a vital role.
RJ Mitchell had the house in Russell Place, Portswood, built to his own designs and it was while living there that he perfected the plans for his greatest legacy.
RJ Mitchell designed a total of 24 different aircraft, although it is for the Spitfire that he is best remembered. The aircraft has been described as "unquestionably the most famous".
