Sir.-Am I the only motorist bemused by Hampshire County Council's decision to reduce the speed limit on the A30 from Beechdown to Brighton Hill Roundabout to 30mph?

Just a few years ago, this road was rated at 60mph, then reduced to 40mph.

For most of the rush hour, traffic on this stretch of road struggles to travel above walking pace, while for the rest of the day the volume of traffic and design of the road are, I believe, well suited to at least a 40mph limit.

Imposing a limit with no logic will create more hazards than it solves.

Drivers who obey the new limit could find themselves the cause of shunts from behind as motorists going with the flow at the usual 40mph run into the back of cars travelling too slow for the conditions. Also, drivers frustrated at cars travelling too slow for the conditions will risk dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.

Please, Hampshire County Council, let's be sensible here.
