Sir.-Remembrance Sunday this year falls on November 13, and I shall be taking part in the annual Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial Park, Basingstoke, at 11am.

Members of the public are invited to attend.

I write to ask readers to support this year's Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal by buying a poppy and wearing it with pride.

In doing so, we remember the sacrifices made by our armed forces in order that future generations are able to live in peace and freedom.

The Royal British Legion was formed to care for the needs of those who fought, not only in the two world wars but also in the many other conflicts throughout the world since them.

The Poppy Appeal is the principal source of funds which directly supports the legion's welfare and benevolent work.

It provides residential and convalescent care, ensures that hundreds of people feel safe in their own homes by providing them with Life Line alarms, campaigns for the rights of ex-service men, women and their dependants, helps with war pension advice and delivers vocational training.

I heartily endorse all that the local members of The Royal British Legion are doing for the appeal, and if anyone can help with selling poppies, I know that they would be most grateful.

Anyone wishing to assist should contact Bill Sample on 01256 357666.
