MORE than 100 residents and workers have been allowed back into their homes and offices after they were forced to evacuate a Southampton road following a gas leak.

They returned to properties in Bellevue Road at 11am yesterday after they had been asked to leave on Tuesday afternoon.

An hour later the road was fully reopened.

About 100 residents had to spend the night in hotels or with friends and family while gas company staff worked to fix the leak and clear pockets of gas that had built up.

A Southern Gas Network spokesman said: "It was all done and dusted at 11.30am.

"Residents were allowed back into their homes at 11am and the road was re-opened an hour later."

The cause of the leak was a fractured cast iron main.

The spokesman added: "We apologise to anyone who was inconvenienced last night but safety is our main concern and we wanted to make sure that every trace of gas was removed."
