Eastleigh's voting members will decide the future direction of the club at an extraordinary general meeting on February 20.

But on the field there is only one direction Paul Doswell's side are heading - onwards and upwards towards the Conference South play-off spots.

Despite recent unrest behind the scenes, the Spitfires players have pulled together and, remarkably, last night's 2-0 humbling of fifth-placed Lewes was their fifth win in six league games since the turn of the year.

Fittingly it was ex-Saints midfielder David Hughes who set up the decisive second goal on his 150th club appearance.

Hughes, who was presented with a framed shirt before kick-off, played a terrific ball down the right and, not for the first time, Andy Forbes' pace proved too hot for Lewes to handle.

When he finally applied the brakes, he looked up and delivered a perfect ball across for Dave Town to net his fourth goal in three games from close range.

Forbes had also been the architect of Eastleigh's 21st-minute opener with one his many raids through the left channel.

He pulled the ball back for skipper Danny Smith to beat keeper Paul Wilkerson at the second attempt.

Lewes had their chances but found Spitfires' giant keeper Wayne Shaw a formidable obstacle.

On 54 minutes the big man saved brilliantly with his feet from Djoumin Sangare and then he wiped the celebratory smile off substitute Luka Fontana's face when he somehow got down to save his header on the line.

A good tempered game turned sour on 90 minutes when Eastleigh substitute Nick Stavroulakis escaped with a yellow card for a two-footed challenge on irate defender Steve Robinson.

"As someone who never tackled anyone in his career, I can't condone a challenge like that, but I would say in Nick's defence is that he went for the ball and not through the lad," said Doswell. "We thoroughly deserved our win. We were excellent for the first 45 minutes and carried on where we'd left off in the second half against Thurrock."

Eastleigh chairman Roger Sherwood has stressed that the forthcoming EGM is to decide the best way forward for the club and NOT to discuss Doswell's future as manager.

l Newport IoW will join Eastleigh, Farnborough and Basingstoke in the Hampshire Senior Cup semi-final draw after beating VT FC 4-0 courtesy of Dave Greening (3) and Shaun Taylor.

Neither manager ended up happy with VT's Dave Diaper convinced his side were denied a perfectly legitimate equaliser and Port player-boss Steve Leigh fearing he will be out for the rest of the season with a torn thigh muscle.

Diaper rued: "We fell behind after a minute, but then we more than matched them. Midway through the second half Marc Diaper's corner went in off the far post and was at least two foot over the line.

"If that goal had been given, we would have won, but then they scored three times in the last nine minutes. I can't believe the result."

l Poole made it five games undefeated in Wessex 1 with a 4-1 home win over BAT.

Young Carl Chivers bagged an 18-minute hat-trick - one with his left foot, one with his right and one header - and Leigh Phillips scored the other.
