RESIDENTS are being asked to help the borough council spend thousands of pounds on giving their Basingstoke neighbourhoods a makeover.

Normanton Road, Mullins Close and Osborne Close, in Oakridge, and Jersey Close, in Popley, have been chosen to benefit from the borough council's environmental renewal programme.

The council's environmental chief, Councillor Sean Keating, is considering spending £124,000 to carry out work in the roads, and is asking residents for their suggestions of small changes that could make a big difference to where they live.

More than £1million has already been spent over the last three years in more than 60 locations in the borough.

Work carried out on the most recent project in Norn Hill included transforming alleyways by resurfacing walkways, planting trees and shrubs and blocking off some access points to improve security.

Cllr Keating said: "We want to help residents be even more proud of the area where they live.

"When asked what features were most likely to improve the look and convenience of their immediate neighbourhood, ninety per cent of those responding to our last residents' survey said attractive trees, shrubs and grass areas, and 95 per cent said streets with good seats, litter bins, paving and lighting.

"These are exactly the sorts of changes that are being implemented thanks to the investment in the environmental renewal programme."
