IDEAS on how to redesign a part of Basingstoke have gone on display for residents to have a look at.

A well-attended consultation event was held at Marnel Junior School to give Popley people the chance to air their views about plans to regenerate their neighbourhood.

The areas that are being looked at include the shops, pub and parking spaces in Madeira Close and the green space between Ascension Close and Cayman Close.

Improvements for the Faroe Close and Maldive Road maisonettes are also being considered. Possibilities include modernising the properties, along with the provision of new homes, and replacing the shops, pub and play areas.

Experts were on hand from Sentinel Housing Association and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to offer information, discuss concerns and answer questions. The two organisations are behind the scheme.

Val Bagnall, Sentinel's business director, said: "The drop-in event went extremely well and residents were very enthusiastic about the plans. We were pleased with the turnout and received some very positive comments and ideas.

"Once the feasibility study is complete, and we have gone through the detailed residents' questionnaires, we will be working closely with the architects and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to ascertain what is the preferred option before communicating further with the local residents."

Borough councillor Jane Frankum, ward member for Popley West, said: "It's important people have their say. It's their homes, so they must come first."
