MARK Bernard has quit the Basingstoke Bison for a dream job in America.

The 37-year-old coach only recently signed a one-year deal, committing himself to guiding the Herd for a third term in the Elite League.

But at the Canadian's request, his employer, Planet Ice, has now released him from his contract so he can become assistant general manager at the Norfolk Admirals.

Based in Virginia, the American Hockey League side are affiliated to the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks, putting them just one tier down from the top division in the world of ice hockey.

Bernard said it had been a head-spinning week, admitting he was not looking for another job but that the call came out of the blue and resulted in him jetting off to America last weekend to discuss terms.

He said: "Norfolk rang me on Thursday and I spoke with Mike Petrouis and Mark Johnson and told them of the offer. They Norfolk proved they were serious about it, flying me out on Friday."

The Virginia city is a place the Bison's former general manager and head coach knows well. He played there when they were called the Hampton-Roads Admirals and was part of two championship-winning teams.

Bernard (pictured above), who has not yet confirmed a start date with Norfolk and is still in Basingstoke, added: "It is a big jump for me to now be one step down from the NHL, and you never know where I could be in a couple of years.

"I have a mixed bag of emotions at the moment. I am excited, but I am also sad as my family have made a lot of friends in the town."

Mark Johnson, Planet Ice's group general manager, said: "It is disappointing for the organisation, as Mark has really moved things forward. But he goes with our blessing.

"This job is just too good an opportunity for him to turn down."

Having recruited Bernard two years ago, once again the job to find a suitable successor has fallen on the shoulders of former player Johnson.

He said: "We have already started looking and Mark will be helping with that. I would hope to have someone in place in about a month.

"We will also be interviewing for a marketing manager as we look to take the organisation forward once again in the coming season."

Bernard's move leaves the Bison in the same boat as three of their Elite League rivals - Belfast Giants, Edinburgh Capitals and Nottingham Panthers - who have all yet to confirm a coach for the forthcoming campaign, which starts in September.
