CONSERVATIVES stormed back into power in Winchester early today with a stunning election victory.

The Tories won seven seats to snatch control of the city council for the first time since the early 1990s.

In an unprecedented night of success they ousted two party leaders, Liberal Democrat Sheila Campbell and Labour's Patrick Davies.

While other Hampshire councils saw little change the Liberals look to have suffered from fall-out from city MP Mark Oaten's relationship with a male prostitute.

Long-serving councillor Brian Collin saw his 600-plus majority from 2002 slashed after three recounts to just eight votes.
