THIS weekend the Andover Thrashers American Football Club kicks off its second season in the British American Football League with a home match against the Chester Romans.

While Thrashers, who have several Romsey-based players in their squad, are still fairly new to the league, Chester will be celebrating the kick-off of their 20th season. Despite their longevity, though, the Romans have had a tough couple of years in the higher Division 1A of the BAFL, with back-to-back one-and-nine seasons which resulted in their relegation to Division 2.

They still present Andover, with a fine opportunity to see how far the team has progressed.

It's been a busy off-season for the Thrashers, with most of last season's players returning for another campaign.

They include veteran quarterback/head coach Andy Mountain and their Rookie of the Year, linebacker Phil Price.

One notable absentee will be middle linebacker Tyler Metcalfe, who sustained a career-ending arm injury playing for the Thrashers last season.

In addition the Thrashers welcome several new players - including Nick Michael, who has a wealth of experience.

The team have been training hard since the end of last year and the coaches, some of whom are also new boys, are optimistic of a much better year.

The match against Chester Romans kicks off at 2:30pm on Sunday (May 7) at Harrow Way Community School, Andover.

There is no charge for entrance to the match, and the team are hoping to build on a positive attendance at matches last year.
