AT THE END of a frantic end-of-season fixture pile-up, Mottisfont took on Sporting BTC in the final of the Trophyman League Cup at Hamble ASSC's Follands Park ground on Wednesday night.

Victory in this game against their old sparring partners has done much to wash away the disappointment of a drubbing in the Southampton Senior Cup final. Font shouldn't be too greedy - they've been unbeaten in the league all season and won it by some distance, and two trophies in a year should be enough for anyone!

There was drama before the kickoff when the Font coach had to make a detour because of an accident on the motorway.

The kickoff was delayed by ten minutes to compensate, and just two minutes into the game there was a further lengthy delay when two Sporting players needed treatment after a clash of heads.

The game then settled down with both sides fighting for control.

Font were doing most of the attacking, but too often they relied on launching long balls into the Sporting area, where they were dealt with confidently.

Halfway through the first half Sporting took the lead when Wilson fired home at the far post.

That rocked Font back on their heels, but they almost equalised when Guy Bewick shaved the post with a looping shot and had a header saved by the BTC keeper.

As half-time approached Sporting came close to a second, but Font looked determined at the start of the second half, spreading the ball about well with Alan Bundy prominent.

Bewick, who was causing trouble with his quick breaks, equalised with a header from a sliced attempted clearance.

Sporting tried to strike back, but the Font defence of Danny Belbin, Jon Cook, Andy Fryer and Colin Morris protected keeper Paul Fielder well.

There was one moment of alarm when Fryer's backpass fell short, but the Sporting striker's shot went just past the post.

Font looked the more likely to grab the winner. Dave Kemp, on as sub for Nigel Cutler, latched on to a through ball from Bundy, and grabbed the all-important goal with an accurate shot just inside the post.

With skipper Robbie Abbott and Nobby Carr urging the team on from midfield, Font held out for a fine victory and superb league and cup double.

Danny Belbin was voted 'man-of-the-match', and Font's band of travelling fans went home with beaming smiles.
