LACK of storage space is a problem in most homes, no matter what size they are.

Our constantly-changing lifestyles mean we need more storage than ever before. We accumulate an endless amount of things, from new clothes to the latest hi-tech must-haves, and let's not forget all those indispensable kitchen gadgets.

It's all got to fit in our homes somewhere - so what's the answer?

Good organisation and clever storage are the key weapons in the fight against chaos and clutter.

Work out your requirements. First consider what it is that needs organising. What kind of storage would be best for you?

Every room needs an area to keep items you can access easily when you need them and store out of the way when you don't.

Consider how accessible your items need to be and how efficiently you are using each room.

Could some things be stored in boxes in the attic?

Look around for unused areas, such as the space under the stairs, or think about potential storage areas above your door, on walls or in awkward corners.

Do you have a fireplace recess that you could have floor-to-ceiling storage built into? What about that space under the bed?

Could you be better organised? Are your cupboards too full? Have collections outgrown their current space? Perhaps you have accumulated a collection of magazines that are out of date? Maybe keep the latest edition or cut out relevant articles and keep them in a scrap book.

What kind of storage is right for you? For a small home, built-in options - although pricier - might be best, as they leave more floor space.

However, if you're thinking of moving, a free-standing unit that you can take with you may be a better option.

Most homes have bits and pieces that clutter up a room, such as remote controls, DVDs, toys or magazines and books. To get these in order, sort and file them into smaller storage boxes, folders and trays.

There is an enormous selection available in a variety of styles and finishes.

The simplest solutions are the best, so try to find something that is in keeping with each room.

Allow just a few boxes in each room. If you are collecting too many, you may have to find a larger and more practical solution.

So remember, don't let creeping clutter overwhelm your home - keeping on top of it will help you make the most of your living space.
