The local round of the BARC Championship racing came to Thruxton on Saturday and proved a great day for Hampshire's Stacy Vickers, Steve Cripps and David Hickton.

Racing in the Classic Group 1 Touring Car Championship for cars manufactured before 1983, Hickton, from Andover, qualified his Opel Ascona in second place on the grid.

In front of him was Hedge End's Steve Cripps' Escort RS2000 on pole and back in third the Mazda RX7 of Stacy Vickers from West End.

With Stacy and Steve both spinning at the chicane together, it took a great effort for both of them to pull themselves back to the leaders.

Stacy retook the lead and then led to win by two seconds from David, while finishing a creditable third was Steve.

After such a hard-fought victory, Stacy had to put the champagne on ice for a while as he had to compete in his second race, the pre 1993 Touring Car series.

Racing with cars like BMW M3s, Stacy, in wet conditions, qualified in second.

With a great race starting to take shape, the leading BMW of John Willcocks retired on lap eight.

This left Stacy to defend his lead from the BMW of Jim McLoughlin, who retired a lap later, leaving Stacy to cross the line and win his second race by more than eight seconds.

The next racing at Thruxton is the prestigious British Touring Car Championship on June 4.
