MEMBERS of New Forest District Council have elected a new chairman.
David Scott has succeeded former Squadron Leader Michael Pemberton, pictured below right, who has stood down after completing his 12-month term of office.
Cllr Scott, who represents Bramshaw, Copythorne and Minstead, was elected at the council's annual meeting.
He was praised by council leader Mel Kendal, who said: "David has always stood up for his electors rigorously and vigorously."
Fellow Copythorne councillor Derek Tipp praised Cllr Scott's fairness and independence.
The new chairman will raise money for three charities - the Minstead Training Project, the 2nd New Forest North (Stanley's Own) Scout Group and Bramshaw Riding for the Disabled.
Tributes were paid to Cllr Pemberton, who represents Milford.
Cllr Scott, formerly the authority's vice-chairman, praised the care and friendship that he had shown him during what he described as his "apprenticeship year".
Chief executive Dave Yates said the former RAF man had mixed military-style discipline with chivalry and charm.
