Ventnor have sent ECB Southern Electric Premier League title holders BAT Sports crashing out of the Cockspur Cup national club championship.

They piled up 274-4 at Steephill before bowling out BAT for 180 to celebrate a handsome 94-run second-round win.

Mark Fletcher (66) was prominent as Ventnor moved to 114-3, but the real damage was caused by Neil Westhorpe (79 not out) and Ian Hilsum (73), who piled on 160 for the fourth wicket.

BAT's Lee Savident (32) and Archie Norris (33) took 67 runs off the opening ten overs, but a three-wicket burst by Charlie Freeston (3-17) halted their progress.

Apart from David Banks (35), the remainder of the BAT innings faltered against the spin of Hilsum (4-34) and pace of Andy Day (2-38).

Ventnor's reward is an attractive home tie with former Lord's winners Reading, who snatched a dramatic last-ball win over Alton at Sonning.

Howard Gadsby (60) and Richie Morgan (51) steered Alton to 216-6 but Reading won by six wickets - with a six off the last ball of the match!

Gosport Borough, who surprised Andover in the opening round, were put to the sword as 2005 semi-finalists Havant ran up a massive 310-6.

Paul Gover (65), Steve Dean (62) and Stuart Ransley (54) all hit half-centuries for Havant, while Ollie Jones made 49 not out.

Mike Rees (68) and Pete Robson (26) took Gosport's reply to 82-1, but three wickets each by spin pair Richard Hindley (3-6) and Ransley (3-42) sent the Borough sliding to 146 all out.

Seriously weakened South Wilts bowed out, losing by seven wickets to Basingstoke & North Hants at Bemerton.

Russell Rowe (53) anchored South Wilts' 148 all out, but with only five first team players available, the Salisbury club were unable to halt Basingstoke's inevitable victory charge.

A young Bashley (Rydal) side put up a gallant fight before losing by three wickets to Portsmouth at St Helen's, Southsea.

Teenager Chris Jones (41) and Neil Thurgood (41) provided an 88-run platform for Bashley, who tumbled from a promising 123-2 to 156 all out, with off-spinner Seth Simmons taking 4-29.

Alex Mortimore (3-33) had Portsmouth wobbling at 49-3 (Michael Barnes 30), but Sam Lavery (52) and Simmons (30) moved the host club to 134 before Neil Taylor's spell of 3-6 created some late panic in the ranks.

Bournemouth claimed the Dorset bragging rights after beating Weymouth by four wickets at Redlands to clinch a third round tie with Portsmouth on Sunday week.

They overhauled Weymouth's 188-6 (Ben Lawes 49) with 11 overs to spare.

Despie losing Martin Miller early on, Bournemouth got on top through Liam Aslett (43) and Cowley, whose 67 off 56 balls, including two sixes and eight fours.

Bournemouth lost six wickets achieving their target, but youngsters Alex Kennedy (21) and Simon Ridley (18) did their bit before victory was achieved.
