A VARIETY performance extravaganza organised by students at Brighton Hill Community College has raised hundreds of pounds for a Basingstoke hospice.

A group of about 30 students in Year 11 took part in the lively show that was jam-packed with singing, music-making, dancing and acting.

The event was organised entirely by pupils studying towards an AS Level in critical thinking and raised £625 for St Michael's Hospice in Aldermaston Road, Basingstoke.

The show was held in the theatre at the Basingstoke school, in Brighton Way, in front of about 280 people over two nights.

Highlights included a performance by drama students of scenes from their GCSE piece Strained Beliefs, based on 1930s Germany; songs written and sung by Sarah Hallet, Sarah Woods and Kim Jones; a solo dance performance by Emily Hewitt; and a ballet duet with Katie Brown and teacher Paul Richardson.

A ball gown fashion show was also held by GCSE textiles students and rock band Rob Made Me Emo also took to the stage.

Claire Barker, curriculum manager, who supported the students, said: "They'd aimed to raise about £500, so we're all really pleased to have exceeded that.

"The students organised everything themselves. They really enjoyed taking part in the shows and the audiences seemed to be having a great time too."
