Romsey Town Youth Team completed an amazing league and cup double last weekend - they are only the second team to achieve this feat in the last 10 years.

On Sunday at Winchester City FC's Abbots Barton Ground, Romsey Town Under 18s won the Salvage Cup final. Town had already clinched the Southampton Youth League, finishing the league season undefeated.

In fact, the only competitive defeat sustained by Romsey's Under-18s all season was against Moneyfields in the third round of the Hampshire FA Cup.

It was in winning the Salvage Cup that the team gave its best performances, scoring 35 goals and conceding only 2.

Sunday's cup final opponents Ice Sports finished runners-up behind Romsey in the league. With the two top teams in contention, the final was always likely to be tense and competitive, and so it proved.

Ice had the better of the early exchanges, twice coming close to taking the lead. But on 18 minutes an Ally Pickering free kick from 30 yards out found the back of the net to put Town ahead.

After the goal, Romsey took control and went in at half-time with a well deserved lead.

The second half was to prove very dramatic. Ice came out and attacked from the whistle, and after ten minutes were awarded a controversial penalty when one of their players was adjudged to have been pushed in the penalty area.

To the relief of the Romsey team, the penalty was put wide.

After this miss, Ice became increasingly frustrated, collecting several yellow cards. During this period, keeper Ben Rodgers - one of three Romsey players making his first appearance after three months out with injury - made a magnificent save to deny Ice the equaliser.

After about 65 minutes the referee dismissed an Ice player for a second bookable offence, and from then on Town took control.

On 75 minutes an injury to Michael Gough forced a reshuffle in the Romsey team, with substitute Rob Mullins coming on up front. It was his strength and determination that led, on 80 minutes, to the second goal. Mullins beat the defence wide on the right and got to the touchline before laying a superb pass back across the box to top scorer Tom Donaldson. He cleverly rounded his marker before hammering the ball into the left corner of the goal.

Before the final whistle Romsey had one last golden opportunity to score. Mullins broke through the Ice defence and went one on one with the Ice goalkeeper, who pulled off an outstanding save to deny the Romsey man.

At the end of the match, Romsey Town were presented with their cup and league trophies... and went on to celebrate their magnificent double late into the night!

The team finished the Southampton League and Cup season undefeated, scoring a remarkable 84 goals and conceding only 25.

"I have never been as excited about a squad of players as when I first saw them together for pre-season training," said manager Paul Lomax.

"Winning the double confirms what an exceptional group of players they are.
