A new chief executive has been chosen to run the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, and he brings with him four years' experience of leading a three-star NHS Trust.

Andrew Way, who will join the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust in July, after being selected by its board, has been chief executive of Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Trust since January 2001.

Between 1995 and 2001, Mr Way worked at Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust, latterly as chief operating officer.

Mr Way said: "The Royal Free is a big and leading-edge trust on the threshold of a number of exciting developments. There are challenges, but there always are for complex, constantly changing organisations, and I am delighted to have been given the chance to ensure it grasps and overcomes them."

Pam Chesters, chair of the trust, said: "I am delighted that Andrew will be joining us. He brings a wealth of experience and energy, which will be invaluable in building on the Royal Free's successes and tackling the challenges we currently face."

Mr Way replaces Martin Else, who left the trust for a job in Whitehall on May 6. The hospital has annouced that it is to honour Mr Else by naming a ward after him.
