SUPERMAN, Robin Hood and a bunch of cavemen could be seen pedalling across Hampshire's country lanes at the weekend.

A group of fundraisers in fancy dress raised more than £1,000 for the Alzheimer's Society by taking part in a charity bicycle ride.

About 50 energetic cyclists completed the 14-mile route in the sweltering heat, beginning and finishing at The Kings Arms pub in Lockerley and raised £1,079 for the society.

The event was organised by Shelly Blackmore from Lockerley who is preparing to trek the Inca Trail in Peru in September to raise more money.

She decided to take part in the gruelling challenge after her aunt was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last year.

The 32-year-old, who works as an export account handler, said: "It was such a shock when we received the news.

"My aunt is only in her 60s but her condition has worsened rapidly.

"My uncle has been very brave and is a wonderful carer but he does need help.

"Raising money for the society means people like him will have access to professional help while the search for a cure continues."

Shelly said she had received so much support from local businesses and organisations for the charity cycle ride, auction and hog roast and thanked all those who helped.

They include Stairs Butcher, Marwell Zoo, Paultons Park, Beaulieu, Lockerley Motors and The Kings Arms.
