SAINTS legend Claus Lundekvam has been arrested by police on suspicion of possessing drugs, the Daily Echo can reveal.

The former Southampton Football Club captain is understood to have been quizzed by police after he was found with a quantity of controlled drugs.

It is believed the 37-yearold was arrested at his home in Chilworth after police were called there in the middle of the afternoon.

Hampshire Police would not say why they attended the property or what prompted their arrival.

They have since released Lundekvam – who spent 12 years with Saints – on bail while further inquiries are carried out.

It is the latest controversy to surround the retired player, who was last year banned from driving for 28 months after a late night crash on the M3.

The Norwegian admitted drink-driving and failing to stop at the scene of the accident which saw him crash his Audi Quattro Q7 into the back of a van.

He had been driving himself home from a charity golf event and was found to be more than twoand- a-half times over the legal drinkdrive limit.

He was also ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12- month community sentence, and pay costs by Basingstoke magistrates.

Lundekvam’s solicitor Adam Norris, said in mitigation he had not fled the scene, but breached a legal technicality by not remaining there.

Police arrested him shortly after the collision on May 6, last year at a service station about a quarter of a mile away from the scene of the accident, near Junction 9.

Lundekvam made 420 appearances during his 12 years at Saints, retiring last year.

Mr Norris said Lundekvam was of “positive good character”, who gives “unstintingly of his time, energy and money to good causes”.

Lundekvam’s latest arrest happened last Friday afternoon – two days before his former club won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in a Wembley showdown with Carlisle – after police were called at 3.59pm.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police said: “Hampshire Constabulary can confirm that a 37-year-old man from Chilworth, near Southampton, was arrested on March 26 on suspicion of being in possession of a controlled drug. He was released on bail until next month.”
