Labour candidate Aktar Beg is a former Southampton resident whose family has lived in the city for over 50 years.
Mr Beg trained with Hampshire County Council before qualifying as a professional chartered surveyor.
He has worked in local government and the oil and gas industry, and has experience in studying the impact of major construction projects on the environment.
Mr Beg said he has a particular interest in the housing plans for Test Valley.
He was former councillor for Waltham Forest and has been chairman of governors at his local sixth form college.
Mr Beg said he would bring has "extensive knowledge of the education system at all levels" to his role as MP, if elected.
He said he was keen to join with Southampton's Labour MPs in developing Labour's "progressive policies" in Romsey and Southampton North.
