A LITTLE girl who was fighting for her life in intensive care for two weeks after being hit by a car outside her home has woken up from her coma.

Six-year-old Bethany Proudley, known as “Bopper” to her family, is now out of intensive care where she was in a critical condition after being struck by a green Nissan Primera in Carnation Road.

Bethany was crossing the road with her toy scooter after she heard the approach of an ice cream van and was knocked under a parked car.

She suffered life-threatening injuries and, although initially conscious at the scene, she fell into a coma in the ambulance on the way to Southampton General Hospital and had to have emergency surgery.

Doctors now describe Bethany’s condition as “stable” and family members have told the Daily Echo that the Bassett Green Primary School pupil is now on a general ward where she has made remarkable progress.

Family members who have kept a bedside vigil since the accident are delighted that the little girl has opened her eyes and has even managed to smile.

Her cousin Brian Fallows, 32, from Millbrook, said: “She has made remarkable progress and knows people’s names and is asking for drinks so the signs look good.”

More than 500 family members, friends, neighbours and strangers have posted messages of support on a social networking site urging the little girl to get better.

A 33-year-old man from Southampton who was driving the car was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He has been bailed until July pending further inquiries.

The collision happened at 7.42pm on Monday, April 27. Anyone with information should contact Totton Roads Policing Unit quoting Operation Bramblewood on 101.
