A PLAN costing £79m to tackle traffic jams and speed up journeys on the M27 was given the green light by the government.

The motorway linking Southampton and Portsmouth will be widened between junctions three, the M271 interchange and four, the junction with the M3, while climbing lanes for cars to overtake slow-moving lorries will be added between junctions 11 at Fareham and 12 at Portsmouth.

The news will come as a relief to the hundreds of motorists who are regularly forced to sit in frustrating snarl-ups, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.

The Highways Agency plans to start work on the M27 upgrades in April 2008.
