DAVID Edgar's groundbreaking two-part adaptation of Charles Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby is being produced for the first time in more than 25 years at Chichester Festival Theatre until September 2.

Dickens' comic masterpiece follows Nickleby on his journey through 1830s' England.

Along the way, he encounters a variety of eccentric characters in true Dickens' style, including the tyrannical schoolmaster Wackford Squeers and the warm-hearted Crummles Theatre Company from Portsmouth.

A landmark production for the RSC in 1980, David Edgar has substantially rewritten the plays for this production. A cast of 23 actors will play more than 100 parts between them.

Up-and-coming new talents, including Daniel Weyman starring as Nickleby, combine with experienced actors, including Leigh Lawson, Dilys Laye and Susan Jameson.

Jonathan Church co-directs his first show of the season with Philip Franks.
