A TEENAGER who died when she slipped on to a live rail line was the mother of an 18-month-old daughter, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Sam Cook, 18, was electrocuted as she was taking a short cut home to Hedge End after a night out.

Today her devastated partner told how he and his friends desperately tried to keep the youngster alive using CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) techniques for almost an hour until help arrived.

The 22-year-old, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "Sam was the most wonderful and loving person I have ever met.

"I'm absolutely heartbroken and I will never know anyone like her again.

"She was the most amazing person I could ever have hoped to meet."

The accident happened after Miss Cook and her friends climbed over a fence close to Allington Bridge in Allington Lane, near West End, shortly before 3.30am on Sunday.

Her partner said they had walked across a field before spotting the railway line and decided they could follow it to get home.

However after clambering over the fence, Miss Cook slipped down the steep embankment and fell straight on to the live rail which supplies electrical power to trains.

The group immediately called 999 for help while several of them started trying to give Ms Cook CPR in a bid to keep her alive. Floral tributes have been laid close to the spot where Miss Cook died.

One read: "To Sammy. Rest Easy. Love you always, Ben."

Today a spokesman for the British Transport Police confirmed an investigation into the circumstances around the death was under way.
