A MASSIVE search and rescue operation costing thousands of pounds was launched after a group of youngsters were reported in trouble after jumping off a bridge.
Coastguards requested the launch of helicopters, inshore and offshore lifeboats and a land-based team, after a man on a train passing Redbridge Causeway noticed the group of youths leaping into the water and thought one was in trouble.
"As it happens no one was in trouble, but we would urge youngsters considering jumping from bridges to think again.
"Not only do they put their own lives in serious danger, but they are also risking other people's lives if the resources sent to them, which often run into thousands of pounds, were urgently needed elsewhere."
Emergency services had responded to another call concerning youths jumping off bridges, after police were sent to investigate youngsters playing near Southampton Sailing Club, off Victoria Road.
