Hampshire's two hopefuls in the Professional Darts Corporation's World Matchplay Championship are through to the second round after eventful opening games.

Aldershot's James Wade proved predictions of a tough encounter with experienced Dennis Ovens to be way off the mark as the youngster put in the best performance of round one to win 10-1.

"I have never put in practice but I have practiced for 12 days for this and it paid off," said the 23-year-old left-hander.

Cosham's Andy Jenkins followed Wade on to the oche and looked to be heading the same way when he raced into a 6-0 lead over Alan Warriner-Little.

But the double matchplay finalist crawled his way back into the match and took number six seed Jenkins to 9-9 before the former England international held his nerve to win the game 11-9.
