IT is a birthday his family thought he would never see.

However, today Lloyd Grundy celebrates turning 16, having nearly died when he lost control of the bike he was riding and crashed into a parked car.

The teenager was left with multiple injuries including life-threatening chest injuries, a head wound and six broken ribs that punctured his lung.

After spending two weeks in Southampton General Hospital's intensive care unit, the ex-Oaklands School pupil is now recovering at his Lordshill home and looking forward to his day.

However, it will also be tinged with sadness as Lloyd shared his birthday with brother Lewis, 17, who died in a similar accident 18 months ago.

Lewis was riding a bike, with friend Jamie Gosney, 15, riding pillion, when he collided with a car at 3am.

The inquest heard how the bike was not roadworthy and Lewis had been drinking and had taken drugs.

Despite what happened to his brother, Lloyd said he just "wasn't thinking" when he got on a bike to come home from a night out with friends.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Lloyd said he remembers nothing of the accident or the events leading up to it.

"I just remember being at work then the next thing I woke up and I was in hospital in a lot of pain. I don't remember a thing about what happened.

"I reckon I just wanted to get home and got on the bike, I expect I wasn't really thinking."
