A ROAD safety petition in Winchester has hit the 650-signature mark.

People living in Stanmore fear that someone will be killed unless traffic is slowed.

The campaign was sparked by a car smashing at high speed into a parked vehicle in Battery Hill earlier this month.

Maria Woodhouse, 37, of Battery Hill, who owns the Hyundai Lantra damaged in the crash, said that she was having no problems getting people to sign the petition.

"It seems very positive and we are working hard at it," she said.

A meeting is being set up between residents and city councillor Barry Lipscomb, the Cabinet portfolio holder for planning and transport.

This week Mrs Woodhouse heard that the Vauxhall Corsa believed to have inflicted the damage and abandoned in nearby Keble Street had been stolen. It means that the family will have to foot the bill for the crash.

The damage to their Hyundai is so serious that their planned camping holiday will have to be scrapped as they have no vehicle to tow their caravan.

Andrew Garman, 29, another campaigner, of Battery Hill, said: "All the people who have signed have expressed their dismay at the excessive speed that is used around the estate."
