NAUTICAL knight Sir Robin Knox-Johnston added to his list of firsts by competing in the Sydney Hobart Race, one of the most famous yacht races in the world.
At the tender age of 71 the sailing legend joined the crew of Titania of Cowes to ‘tick off another box’ competing in the race across the notorious Bass Straits from mainland Australia to Tazmania for the first time in his illustrious sailing career.
In 1969 Gosport-based Sir Robin became the first person to sail solo non-stop around the globe. Then 38 years later he became the oldest person to complete a singlehanded non-stop circumnavigation in the VELUX 5 OCEANS.
Joining him onboard Titania, one of just two Britsh boats in the 87-strong fleet, was Olympic silver medallist Mark Covell and America’s Cup helmsman Andy Green.
Favourite Wild Oats VI finished first, in one day, 21 hours, 24 minutes.
