A COPY of the Daily Echo is among the items buried today in a time capsule in the foundations of a new £15m maritime museum in Southampton.
The Sea City Museum, in the old magistrates courts at the Civic Centre, is planned to open to the public in 2012 as a major tourist attraction.
The time capsule also contains a USB data stick with images of Southampton, as well as events guides and a ticket from Saturday’s FA cup tie against Manchester United.
The museum is set to open in April next year to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in which 1,520 people – a third of them from Southampton – perished.
Councillor John Hannides said: “I’m genuinely excited the build of Sea City is moving ahead and the pavilion is starting to take shape.
“Items symbolising Southampton today will go down in history forever in the time capsule and will be a good commemoration for hundreds of years to come.
“This museum will not only give residents great pride and attract thousands of visitors – it has also helped gained millions of pounds in investment for the Cultural Quarter.
“The council’s investment demonstrates our ongoing plans to develop Southampton as the capital of the south.”
