A MULTI-MILLION-POUND project to revamp a Southamp-ton shopping centre has begun in earnest.

Work has started on a £2.5m revamp of the entrance to the Mall Marlands in Above Bar.

The work, which involves a major overhaul of the Manchester Street entrance to the mall, is due to be completed in time for the busy Christmas period.

The new scheme will involve the unveiling of an impressive new facade and will also see the enclosure of the Manchester Street entrance to the mall.

The roof itself will be constructed using techniques similar to those which were used to build football stadiums in both Japan and Germany during the last two World Cups.

The facade will feature bright new signage directing shoppers into the mall.

Bosses have also planned a new food and drink area for the centre, which customers will be able to access via an escalator which will be built inside the new entrance.

The new covered walkway will boast additional toilet facilities when it is completed in about three months' time.

Jerry Stampfer, general manager of the Mall Marlands, said: "This is a very exciting time for Southampton.

"We have a long-term commitment to the city and are very pleased to see the first phase of our plans for enhancing and expanding the retail facilities at the Mall Marlands coming to fruition.

"On the back of securing the likes of Starbucks and Fopp, we believe the improvement works will enhance the environment and facilities within the Mall Marlands.

"We are working hard to minimise disruption during the work, and we look forward to unveiling our new-look mall in time for Christmas."
