A SERIAL shoplifter who cleared out a meat aisle in Sainsbury’s and went on a dishonest version of supermarket sweep in Asda has been put behind bars.

Stacy Chant, 33, admitted seven counts of theft at supermarkets and department stores around Southampton during which she stole sausages, beef steaks, cheese and vegetables, as well as two bottles of perfume.

She also stole a Mencap charity bottle containing between £30 and £40 from the counter of Britannia Building Society with the help of an accomplice, and was part of a distraction theft at the Coral betting shop in St Mary’s in which the money tray was emptied of £62.

She was jailed for 15 month for the thefts – most of which were caught on CCTV.

Southampton Crown Court heard how Chant, of Meacher Close, Totton, had ten previous convictions for 30 similar offences and had carried out the latest wave of thefts in breach of a 12 month suspended sentence for five charges of theft and perverting the course of justice.

During one of the thefts the court heard how she went on a “trolley run” in Asda and tried to leave the store without paying for £162 of groceries.

She gave police a false name and address when she was handed an £80 on the spot fine.

Chant admitted to carrying out the thefts to feed a heroin addiction.
