A PENSIONER was in hospital last night after his convertible car flipped onto its roof.

Fire crews said the 75-year-old had had a "lucky escape" after they spent around half an hour cutting the motorist out of his soft-top vehicle following a crash on Wessex Lane, Southampton, at around 10.30pm.

Firefighters from St Mary's station were at the scene, outside the University of Southampton's Connaught Halls of Residence, for another half hour making it safe.

It is not yet known what injuries were suffered by the man, who was taken to Southampton General Hospital.
