A MAN was today found dead in a Hampshire home contaminated with potentially hazardous chemicals.

Police found the body of the man in his mid-fifties when they were called to his house in Wych Lane, Gosport, at 10.53am following a concern for welfare report.

They discovered there were “potentially hazardous chemicals” at the scene and called specialist officers from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service to put up a cordon to protect members of the public.

Traffic was diverted from Wych Lane.

A police spokesman, said: “We can confirm that a man was found deceased within the property. There are no suspicious circumstances.

“Although a chemical substance was involved, it posed no danger to members of the public outside the property. It was effectively dealt with by Hamphire Fire and Rescue Service, and emergency services took precautionary measures in dealing with it in order to safeguard those in the surrounding area.”

Officers are tonight continuing their inquiries to find the next-of-kin.

The area has now been declared safe and the cordon has been lifted.

A file is being prepared for the coroner.
