CONTROVERSIAL changes to opening hours at a Southampton walk-in centre will be introduced next month.

From June 6, Bitterne Walk- In Centre will only be open on weekday evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

The reduction in opening hours follows an 11-week consultation by NHS Southampton City.

During that period campaigners fought to save the service, which they believe should be extended not cut.

The new opening hours will be 6.30pm to 10pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 10pm on weekends and bank holidays.

Dr Adrian Higgins, clinical director of NHS Southampton City, said: “NHS Southampton City has been working with colleagues at Solent NHS Trust to prepare for implementation of the changes.

“We are confident that there will be no significant increase in pressure on health services as a result of the changes but will continue to monitor the impact on both GP practices and the Emergency Department at Southampton General Hospital.”

Outside the hours, residents are urged to visit their pharmacist, GP, minor injuries unit at the Royal South Hants Hospital or call NHS Direct.
