SOUTHAMPTON firefighters were called to a block of flats early today after two balconies caught alight because of a discarded cigarette.
Two crews from St Marys fire station dashed to Goldsmith Court at about 3.30am after the occupant of a fifth floor flat smelt burning.
They extinguished the small fires with a jet from the ground floor before entering the flat where they discovered the cause.
A cigarette had fallen from the balcony above, smouldered for some time before setting fire to the wooden decking floor and then dropped down to the decking on the fourth floor balcony.
The crews were at the scene for less than an hour and no evacuation took place.
