HAMPSHIRE police arrested more than 130 people last month for getting behind the wheel after drinking too much alcohol.

Latest figures released by Hampshire Constabulary from the summer drink and drug campaign revealed one in every 14 drivers failed a breath test in June.

This rose to one in ten when it came to drivers in their 20s.

Officers breath tested 2,165 drivers last month, which saw 160 fail.

In total 136 people were arrested for driving over the alcohol limit and eight were arrested for drug offences.

Currently 130 people have been charged.

Superintendent Chris Brown added: “When you are caught drink-driving you’ll be arrested and held in a cell, normally for several hours. When you get to court you could be fined, banned from driving or even sent to jail.

Of those drivers tested, 813 were stopped following a collision and 47 of those failed. Officers also carried out 19 field impairment tests to check for the signs of drug use.

Superintendent Brown added: “A pint of beer may set you back between £3 and £4 these days, but how does that compare to the cost of someone’s life?

“That’s exactly the risk you run if you get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and I’m pleased to see the overwhelming majority of drivers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight realise that.
