A MAN was punched to the ground and repeatedly kicked during a vicious street robbery in Southampton.

The 31-year-old was walking over the railway bridge in St Mary Street when he was approached by two men who were arguing.

One punched him, before the second then kicked him after he had fallen to the ground.

The attackers, who it is believed had been drinking in a nearby bar earlier in the evening, then stole the victim’s mobile phone and ran off.

Police now want to hear from anyone who saw the attack, which happened at about 12.10am on Sunday, or has any information.

The first man is described as being Asian or Mediterranean in appearance, in his early to mid 40s, 5ft 10in, of large build and with short, black hair. He spoke with a stammer.

The second man was white, about 25, 5ft 8in, of slim build and with short, blond hair which was slightly spiked.

Detectives have arrested a 24-year-old Southampton man on suspicion of robbery in relation to the attack. He has been released on police bail until September 12, pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information should call Det Con Danielle Daltrey at Shirley police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
