A PERSON has been killed and another in hospital following a van crash.

The vehicle, described as a Transit-style van by rescue crews, left the A272, north of Winchester at around 5.30pm yesterday.

It tipped over and collided with a tree on the section of the road running from the A34 junction at Three Maids Hill to the A30.

Emergency crews took one patient to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. A second person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident has been reported to Central Hampshire coroner's office, which said a post mortem was scheduled for Friday afternoon.

An inquest is likely to be opened after the weekend and the identity of the victim of the fatal crash is yet to be revealed.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, emergency crews said, which closed the section of the A272 for much of Thursday evening.
