INVESTIGATORS probing a major fire at a block of flats being built in Southampton say they now believe it was an arson attack.

The fire started at the development in Bursledon Road between Botley Road and Butt's Road.

The blaze caused £500,000 damage to the flats, being built for the city's key workers.

The roads nearby were closed for hours while the flames were tackled.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service used a specially-trained dog to try to discover if the fire had been started deliberately.

It detected several areas where it is believed accelerants may have been used.

Forensic samples have also been sent off for analysis following the blaze shortly before 4.15am on September 8.

Other investigations by police officers have also led to the conclusion the fire was arson.

Detectives are now appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time or who saw anything suspicious and who hasn't yet spoken to police to come forward.

They are asked to contact Det Con Laura Dunsford at Bitterne CID on 0845 045 4545
