A lorry accident caused traffic mayhem yesterday on one of Southampton's busiest routes.
Metal rods and wooden planks were among some of the debris, shown above, that fell off the Leyland DAF heavy tractor articulated lorry that had been transporting a bridge parapet.
The accident happened on the southbound carriageway of the M271, near the Redbridge roundabout, at 3.45pm yesterday.
Police closed off one lane of each carriageway to remove the debris that had fallen off the vehicle.
No one was injured in the accident and the motorway was re-opened shortly after 5pm.
The accident happened close to one of Southampton's worst accident blackspots on the opposite northbound carriageway. Several heavy goods vehicles have overturned on the bend off the Redbridge roundabout on to the M271.
Safety measures were introduced in a £20,000 road improvement scheme last year.
