RESIDENTS at a retirement complex are blooming happy after their gardens scooped a gold medal in the final of a national competition.

The grounds of the Wyke Mark flats in Winchester stunned judges in the New Homes Garden Awards for the Best Landscaped Retirement Development, just two years after the project was completed and opened.

The communal gardens at Wyke Mark were designed by landscape architect Tim Lynch, who wanted to ensure the development never overshadowed the views from the garden.

Run by retirement specialists English Courtyard, the gardens impressed the judges, who said they were particularly pleased by the way the grounds helped promote the importance of outdoor living.

Husband and wife John and Joan Calvert, who moved into the 25-flat complex just a few months ago are thrilled with the award.

John said: "When we moved it wasn't easy to say goodbye to our half-acre garden but we actually have a bigger one now - and without any of the hard work."
